Zoe Saldana will play singer Nina Simone in biopic

In pretty huge casting news, Zoe Saldana has signed to play Nina Simone in the Cynthia Mort biopic of the famous singer. See, those roles in Star Trek and Avatar are really paying off now!

Production of the movie Nina, written and to be directed by Mort, is slated to begin Oct. 16 in L.A. after years in development, the Hollywood Reporter says. David Oyelowo is starring as Clifton Henderson, Simone's manager. Mary J. Blige spent a stretch as the title star while deals were being ironed out, but moved on when trouble with funding arose.

Saldana just finished the sequel to J.J. Abrams' Star Trek, and also closed the book on thriller Out of the Furnace with Christian Bale and Casey Affleck. Now it's time to kick back and relax with the leisurely story of a music icon who was an icon of the civil rights movement and moved overseas after refusing to pay income taxes as a protest against the Vietnam War!
