Julianne Hough draws fire for dressing up as black woman 'Crazy Eyes' for Halloween party
Country singer and Rock of Ages actress Julianne Hough riled up the Interwebs over the weekend by attending a Halloween party with a group playing characters from Orange Is The New Black. It's not so much the group's idea, but the one Hough chose.
She was portraying Suzanne "Crazy Eyes" Warren from the show, played by Uzo Aduba, who is black. As you already know, Hough is not. And Twitter didn't like that she put a ton of bronzer on to simulate being a black character. Besides a ton of complaints about photos online, the NAACP had a problem with it, too.
"The current racial tensions in the United States require careful reflection as we relate to each other. If her behavior is a political statement, she should explain that," Joan Duvall-Flynn, president of the Media Area Unit of the NAACP told Fox News. "If her behavior is an act of impulsive insensitivity, she needs, as a public figure, to be more responsible. And, an apology for such insensitivity is appropriate."
Hough, 25, said she didn't mean anything by it -- only that she was trying to re-create Aduba's character, she wrote on TwitLonger: "I am a huge fan of the show Orange is the New black, actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she has created. It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize."
There are photos of the costume all over the Internet, but WPIX New York offered a good, long look via social media. The Juice* can probably speak for everyone when we say Hough should probably get around for apologizing for leaving Dancing With the Stars, too.
