Maria let everyone else know in a very public forum.

Maria Bello of ER and Coyote Ugly fame came out very publicly this weekend in a heart-warming piece she wrote for the New York Times. Not exactly the Ellen moment, but brave nonetheless — because yes, people still judge.

Bello, 46, writes about telling Jackson, her 12-year-old son with TV exec Dan McDermott, about being gay. “I had become involved with a woman who was my best friend, and, as it happens, a person who is like a godmother to my son,” she wrote.

The Golden Globe nominee — who most recently starred in the film The Prisoners — reveals that she had been with a woman before and goes on to detail how cool her parents are with it and how she, Dan, the woman named Clare and Jackson hang out together on the reg. As for the kid’s reaction? “Mom, love is love, whatever you are.” So yeah, moral of the story: Maria Bello has a girlfriend, and we now want to adopt her awesome family as our own.
