Michael Phelps names first child after swimming coach
What better way to honor your longtime swimming coach than by naming your firstborn son after him? That’s what Michael Phelps did to recognize Bob Bowman when Boomer Robert Phelps was born Thursday night in Arizona.
Bowman called the naming a “big surprise” in a text to the Associated Press.
The 18-time Olympic gold medalist said he and fiancee Nicole Johnson both thought the name was fitting.
“It’s something we both agreed on, thought it was different,” he said last month at a meet in Mesa, Ariz., though the name wasn’t revealed until Thursday.
Phelps, who praised Bowman for being “nothing but one of the best supporters I could ask for,” had been training for the Rio Olympics in high altitude at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs but left to return to Johnson’s side.
As for what he expects of fatherhood?
“I’ll probably be very protective,” Phelps said. “That’s how I am.”
