Nick Cannon wears whiteface, Internet goes crazy
We’re not sure why exactly Nick Cannon thought this was a good idea, but Mariah Carey’s husband took to Instagram on Sunday to share a photo of himself dressed in whiteface. The stunt was an effort to promote his new album White People Party Music, and it’s totally working because who knew that was a thing until right this very second?
“It’s official... I’m White!!!” Cannon captioned the crazy-looking snapshot. “#WHITEPEOPLEPARTYMUSIC #Wppm in stores April 1st!!!!!!Dude Go Get It!!!Join The Party!!!! #GoodCredit #DogKissing #BeerPong #FarmersMarkets #FistPumping #CreamCheeseEating #RacialDraft 'Bro I got drafted!!’”
Okay, the hashtags actually made us laugh out loud just now. As for the name of his Caucasian alter-ego? That would be Connor Smallnut.
“Introducing Connor Smallnut!! #wppm,” he captioned an Instagram video of himself as the character.
Cannon also shared a photo of Robert Downey Jr.’s blackface character from Tropic Thunder.
“Shout out to @RobertDowneyJr This is one of my favorite characters of all time! Hilarious!!!” wrote the America’s Got Talent host.
“There is a big difference between Humor and Hatred.”
Well, some people disagree and think Cannon is really, really racist right now. Commenters have called the singer everything from racist and racialist, to ignorant and hypocritical. Others have come to his defense, calling the skit hilarious and spot on.
Cannon’s now stuck defending himself to the masses on Twitter: “It’s funny how people take themselves so seriously. People love drama! We feed off of it. Just relax and have fun!!”
Note that his profile picture is Smallnut himself. Cannon’s been replying to and retweeting comments questioning his ethics. He even dared one guy to dress in blackface.
“ '@jamesjoe: @NickCannon let me relax, have fun, & wear black face. Lets see how everyone reacts’ Do it! I dare you.”
He also pleaded later on Instagram, “ 'Duuuude everybody Chil-lax!!!!’ ~ Connor Smallnut.”
