Publicist sorry for Beyonce-Jay Z split
Rihanna’s former publicist, Jonathan Hay, has been called out for starting a rumor that Jay Z cheated on Beyonce with the Grammy winner when her career was just beginning to pick up some steam.
According to the New York Daily News, Hay said he has since apologized to Beyonce for starting the rumor in 2005 “out of desperation” when promoting Rihanna’s single Pon de Replay.
Hay is coming clean now because biographer J. Randy Taraborrelli has written a tell-all called Becoming Beyonce: The Untold Story, in which he outs Hay as the person who started the rumor.
“I apologized to her … This whole thing is very awkward,” Hay told the New York Daily News. “I was blindsided by the news of Becoming Beyonce coming out and it couldn’t come at a worse time for me. I’m currently releasing projects with my label Urban Hitchcock through Tidal, a company that is owned by Jay Z and Beyonce … Hopefully this news hasn’t ruined that relationship for me.”
Well, that sure sounded as sincere as a selfish mea culpa can be.
“The PR stunt that I did was out of desperation to help break Pon de Replay,” Hay said. “It was reckless and I didn’t think it was going to work. I was just throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what would stick.”
According to Taraborrelli, the rumor caused a yearlong split between Beyonce and Jay Z in 2005. The author added that Jay Z’s only comment about the gossip was, “Dude, she’s a minor.” Rihanna was just 17 at the time.
