'Reading Rainbow' reaches Kickstarter goal in one day
Possibly one of the best things to happen to 2014: LeVar Burton has launched a Kickstarter campaign to reboot Reading Rainbow.
In other news, both the child and mother in us are squealing with delight.
The campaign had already surpassed its goal of $1 million Wednesday night, reaching $1.3 million thanks to more than 29,000 backers. The total is climbing fast, and the campaign still has 34 days to go.
“I believe that every child has a right, and a need, to be literate,” the show’s host and Star Trek: Next Generation alum wrote. “We have a responsibility to prepare our children … and right now, the numbers show that we, as a society, are failing in that responsibility. Right now, 1 out of every 4 children in America will grow up illiterate.”
The Roots actor noted that Reading Rainbow won 26 Emmys and a Peabody award and said he plans to relaunch the show and his career via a Web series.
“Now, we’re trying to reach a new generation of digital natives,” he wrote.
Oh, and if you can shell out $600, you get to talk to Burton for five to 10 minutes. Score!
