Richard Simmons speaks out on being alive and well

You know how sometimes you just want to escape to Livingston, Mont., and become a hermit for the rest of your life because enough with all the people and traffic and construction noises already?

No? Just me?

Well, Richard Simmons and I must be spirit animals or something because it turns out the fitness superstar is just chilling in his Hollywood Hills mansion and is allegedly fine and clear-minded and just wants to be left alone.

“I am not kidnapped,” the 67-year-old fitness guru told Entertainment Tonight’s executive producer, Brad Bessey, during a phone interview on Sunday. “I am just in my house right now.”

The interview was recorded and posted on ET Online, and Simmons sounds just fine. He just wants to have some peace and quiet, okay?

“No one should be worried about me,” said the Sweatin’ to the Oldies star. “The people that surround me are wonderful people who take good care of me.”

The interview follows a story published by the New York Daily News in which several friends said they were “very concerned” about Simmons after he ghosted them in 2013. His last public appearance was in 2014.

Simmons called the report “very hurtful,” adding, “I love all the people who worry about me, but it was time for me to take some time to be by myself. For the last 40 years I have been traveling, teaching classes, and I had a knee injury, so I had a knee replacement, which was very difficult for me… I have really just been taking it easy, staying at home, working out in my gym and doing the things I haven’t done in a very long time.”

As for theories that Simmons gained weight, not true, said the fitness icon.

“I still weigh 150,” Simmons said. “I work out every day. I have a gym at the house, and I am very healthy.”

Fans will be happy to know that the former General Hospital actor vowed to make a comeback, telling Today show hosts on Monday, “You haven’t seen the last of me. I’ll come back and I’ll come back strong.”

But, he added, “I’ve taught, like, thousands and thousands of classes and, you know, right now I just want to sort of just take care of me,” he said. “I just really don’t want to do anything. I just don’t want to be traveling anymore. It certainly has taken its toll on me.”

Simmons told ET that no one should worry about his condition.

“This is how I want to live my life right now,” he said. “And to all the people that are worried about me, please don’t be. If I was in any trouble, if I was hurting in any way, I would reach out. It is time right now for Richard Simmons to take care of Richard Simmons.”
