Rihanna's photo with a slow loris leads to two arrests in Thailand
An Instagram photo Rihanna posted Friday showing her holding an endangered slow loris led to two arrests in Thailand over unlawful possession of the animals. Who says she doesn't care about the big issues?
A 20-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy were arrested in Phuket for allegedly peddling protected species after the image was posted to Instagram and then Twitter, the AP reports. "Look who was talkin dirty to me!" Rihanna wrote in the caption. This is before she played with a herd of elephants and went to a live sex show, mind you.
"Phuket authorities were alerted to the picture, and last night police arrested the two individuals who brought out the loris as a photo opportunity for tourists," Phuket district chief Weera Kerdsirimongkon told the AP. "It's like a cat-and-mouse game. But this time it's bigger because a celebrity like Rihanna posted the picture, and there were more than 200,000 'likes' from around the world." The pair face up to four years in prison and a $1,300 fine. Rihanna, meanwhile, continued on to Singapore Sunday night as part of her tour.
The slow loris itself is a small, squirrel-like primate that has a habit of secreting a toxin from their limbs, which is then applied to fur or transferred with a bite. So not only was Ri-Ri pointing out where the lawbreakers were, she was courting real danger. Oh, but look how cute!
