Robert Downey Jr. hints he might be ending his run in 'Iron Man'
With Iron Man 3 on its way to theaters, Robert Downey Jr. is already hinting he may soon give up playing Tony Stark and head off to greener pastures. That pretty much means the end of the Iron Man franchise, as far as The Juice* is concerned, because no one could fill those Italian loafers.
Apparently an ankle injury he suffered while performing a stunt led to the actor's soul-seraching: "It got me thinking about how big the message from your cosmic sponsor needs to be before you pick it up," Downey told GQ. "How many genre movies can I do? How many follow-ups to a successful follow-up are actually fun?"
Besides, he said, he's way too creative to keep doing the same thing for long.
"I come from a family of very innovative writers and directors and actors and artists, and the circle of friends they were in were the people I heard having pun-offs playing poker at two in the morning, and it was just the most comforting aspect of my childhood," he said. "So there's this kind of legacy of souls from what I consider to be a very particular time in entertainment, and I'm sensing a return to that."
We're sensing a return to mediocre superhero movies when he does hang it up. He's possibly the bestactor-to-superhero matchup since Liam Neeson played Darkman.
