VIDEO: See Mariah Carey's 35-carat engagement ring from billionaire James Packer
Take notes, men with bazillions of dollars to throw away.
35 carats. That's how much diamond is currently weighing down Mariah Carey’s left ring finger. To put things in perspective, that’s larger than Beyonce and Kim Kardashian’s engagement rings combined.
Now back to Carey. The still-married diva of legend got engaged Thursday night to the fourth-richest man in Australia, TMZ reports. Carey’s billionaire beau, 48-year-old James Packer, is still married, too, but that didn’t stop him from gathering the 45-year-old Honey singer’s nearest and dearest for a private dinner at Eleven Madison Park in New York City where he got down on one knee and popped the question.
The pair started dating in June 2015.
Carey’s divorce from second husband Nick Cannon, the father of her two children, is finally starting to move along after the 35-year-old America’s Got Talent host allegedly dragged his feet, reportedly to leverage for more money. James Packer’s divorce from Erica Packer, who happens to be dating Seal, might take more time because new laws in Australia have slowed the process.
So for now it’s all about the ring, designed by Carey’s longtime jeweler and friend, Wilfredo Rosado. The bauble, which looks like it belongs in a museum or velveteen pouch or something, consists of one massive emerald-cut diamond and two tapered baguettes in a platinum setting.
“I took the standards super high, and I wanted to create a ring that could not be measured up to,” Rosado told Vogue, adding, “We have the same taste, and when it came down to it, I really wanted to create something for her that was about new beginnings. I wanted to give her something super sophisticated and something that took away all of the embellishments that a lot of people use when they design engagement rings these days. But it is epic. It’s an epic ring for an epic time in her life.”
Cannon is handling the news like a pro, writing on Instagram, “Congrats to @MariahCarey and James! May God Bless Your Future Union… #GreatPeople #GreatCouple.” The message accompanied a meme of Cannon passed out in a hospital bed with Kevin Hart telling him, “It’s just a ring Nick…”
This all feels so right that it has to be wrong.
