This $10 gadget can save your life

Last weekend tragedy struck when a convertible went over a seawall in Madeira Beach and the driver drowned. That got me thinking about a gadget I keep in my car that is meant for this very situation.

ResQMe 2-in-1 Keychain Rescue Tool

This is the ResQMe 2-in-1 Keychain Rescue Tool by NOV8. I keep one in the compartment in my armrest. When a car hits the water and starts filling up fast, this little gadget will safely and easily break out your windows and cut your seatbelts so you can swim to safety. Rescuers recommend using a window to exit a sinking car because the water pressure usually makes it impossible to open a door until the car is completely submerged. By then it may be too late. The ReQMe sells for $10 at local retail stores and online.

Watch this tragic yet excellent video that shows what you'll face if you drive your car into the water. At the end there is a great demonstration of how the ResQMe tool works.

In addition to the ResQMe tool, Swiss+Tech makes the Body Guard 5-in-1 and 7-in-1 tools that offer additional features such as an emergency flasher, alarm, tire gauge, thermometer and flashlight.

The LifeHammer is the larger version of the keychain-sized gadgets. It's great to keep in your car or truck and works well when you need to break out the glass to rescue someone from the outside. It's about $15.

Think about all the times you drive over bridges and near water each day. It probably won't happen to you but if it does, don't you want to be ready?
