Apple to unveil OS X Lion, iOS 5 and iCloud at WWDC on June 6

screen_shot_2011-06-01_at_8.15.10_am.pngBreaking away from their usually secretive approach to product announcements, Apple has announced they will kick off the Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC) next week with an unveiling of Mac OS X Lion along with iOS 5, the mobile operating system that drives the iPhone, iPad and iPod line. Those two announcements are updates to existing software products and were expected. The surprise announcement was iCloud, Apple's upcoming cloud server service that had been rumored but not confirmed.

One of the things I really don't like about the current iTunes system is the need for wired (USB) syncing. With iCloud, Apple could simplify syncing of music, video, apps, contacts, calendars and other data by syncing on the fly to all devices. This likely is the completely wireless replacement for MobileMe for which we've been waiting, and it could be a game-changer.

I'll be posting details from the WWDC on Monday so stay tuned!
