Apple's Steve Jobs taking medical leave, remains as CEO

Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and considered to be the driving force behind many of the most popular tech gadgets in the past 10 years, announced today that he is taking a medical leave of absence but will remain as CEO to make critical decisions. This is the email he sent to Apple employees today:

At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health. I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company.

I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for all of Apple’s day to day operations. I have great confidence that Tim and the rest of the executive management team will do a terrific job executing the exciting plans we have in place for 2011.

I love Apple so much and hope to be back as soon as I can. In the meantime, my family and I would deeply appreciate respect for our privacy.

Jobs has had a number of medical issues over the last few years and took a similar leave in January of 2009. He has been reported to be a survivor of a type of pancreatic cancer and a recipient of a liver transplant. No details were released about his current medical condition or whether this leave is related past medical conditions. No time frame was given for Jobs' return.
