Astronaut checks in on foursquare from space station

26

October

I tried foursquare for a couple of days and really didn't get it. If you're not familiar with foursquare, it's kind of a combination of Twitter, Loopt and geo-caching all rolled into one. Even though it doesn't float my boat, something happened on Friday that earned foursquare some extra geek points in my book.

At 10:09 AM on Friday, NASA astronaut Douglas Wheelock, aka Astro_Wheels, checked in on foursquare at the International Space Station which earned him the NASA Explorer Badge (I think he already has one!). Wheelock is the commander of ISS Expedition 25, a team of American astronauts and Russian cosmonauts. And now, I'm guessing he's the mayor of the ISS too.

It's not clear if Wheelock also collected his free scoop of astronaut ice cream but you can get one, and the same badge, by checking in on foursquare at Kennedy Space Center or any other space-related facility.

Wheelock also is posting constantly on Twitter and you can follow his tweets and twitpics from space and send him messages using hashtag @astro_wheels.
