Capture 360 panoramas in seconds with your iPhone
I love panoramic photography. With a number of high-end panoramic photo gadgets at my disposal, I have made some really nice images over the years. But my favorites are the ones I've made with my iPhone. Why? Because it's really cool to be able to make spontaneous panos when the situation is right. No planning, no tripod...just turn and shoot. A pano in your pocket.
Up to this point my favorite app for making panos has been, logically, an app called Pano. It's a simple app that lets you take multiple photos and then stitches them together. After you take each photo, Pano shows you a small piece of the previous frame so you can line up objects and hide your seams. It's very simple and works extremely well. Take a look at this one I made recently, of the Seminole Warhawk Band warming up before a rehearsal.
Pano is great and with a tripod you can make very precise panoramic images with great quality. It takes a little time, however, and when things in the photo are moving around you can end up with cloned people and objects. If only there was an app that would do it faster...
Enter 360 Panorama, a new app from Occipital that lets you make panoramas in seconds. With 360 Panorama, you just hold up your iPhone, press the capture button and spin around as the image is "painted" on your screen. When you're done you can save the image as a flat pano to your camera roll or email it. Here's one I made this morning, of the courtyard in Westpark Village in Tampa. The pano was created in 11.9 seconds.
Here's where it get's better. 360 Panorama also creates interactive panoramas. After you create one you can use a Twitter account to post links to the pano on Occipital's site. There you can zoom in, zoom out and spin the pano around for the full experience. Take a look at the same pano you see above, now in interactive mode.
The video below shows you how 360 Panorama works. It's definitely a great panoramic tool, especiallys when you need to create a pano in a hurry. Normally $2.99 it's currently on sale for $.99 and is a bargain at either price. Pano is great too, and with both in your app library you will always be ready to pan and scan your world.
