Capture your weight through WiFi

September

Yesterday I told you about a mobile broadband-enabled pill bottle cap so it seems appropriate to follow up with another health-related, wireless gadget. How about an Internet-connected body scale that automatically sends your weight data to a personal web site or to your iPhone through WiFi?

The WiFi Body Scale by Withings automatically records your weight, fatty mass and body mass index (BMI) then transfers the data using WiFi to a personal profile page on the Withings site, to your blog or to Twitter or Facebook. Using a free iOS app you also can view the data on your iPhone or iPod and the scale can be configured to send weekly progress reports via email. Up to eight people can use the scale and the data for each person is collected independently and sent to separate accounts. The scale retails for $159.

This is a pretty cool use of WiFi and for people who are on a weight-loss program it could be a great tool. Having an automated way to track progress makes things easier. It does, however, encourage you to check your weight constantly. For those who struggle with weight loss this could have a negative effect, especially during upward fluctuations. Of course you don't have to get on the scale every day so like most automatic things, manual control is still needed. And I suppose if you were losing weight and wanted to celebrate and share, the Twitter and Facebook options might be a good thing. I can guarantee you though, if I had one of these, you would NOT see me tweeting or Facebooking my weight.
