Clink virtual glasses to toast the new year with free Ikea iPhone app
Want to ring in the new year in a gadgety way? Well with this cool new iPhone Skål! app from Ikea you can toast with your iPhone friends, exchange contact information and create a photo of the moment to share on social networks, all with one clink of your virtual glass. In Scandinavian culture, a skål is a toast of goodwill and friendship offered when drinking, sitting down to eat, or at a formal event.
First you choose from ten different glasses. When you fill your glass your choice of beverage (champagne, beer, wine or milk) is decided by the glass you choose. The app uses your camera to make your surroundings the background, so as you hold out your iPhone it sort of looks like you're holding a glass (come on, work with me here). Touching two iPhones together creates a very realistic clinking sound and a photo of the two glasses is created to commemorate the exchange so it can be saved or shared on Facebook or Twitter. With each toast you exchange names and photos that also are sent to a community photo gallery for others to view from within the app.
This is a pretty cool idea and although it's from Ikea, they really aren't using it to push their products. I suspect the glasses featured are available in their stores but they don't make their money selling glasses.
But here's one important thing. The whole app is in Swedish! And even though there are some iconic pictures and obvious phrases, like "Fyll upp glas," I found myself fumbling around trying to figure things out. There isn't an English translation button so brush up on your Swedish for this one.
