eBay offers guaranteed $200 for iPhones and Androids as Verizon incentive

February

Could it be Verizon has struck a deal with eBay? A promotion on eBay's home page offers a guaranteed $200 for the iPhone 4 and 3GS, Motorola Droid X, HTC EVO and Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant. screen_shot_2011-02-12_at_11.23.34_pm.pngThe offer, part of their "Instant Sale" program, says "Cash in to get an iPhone on Verizon."

Because of the icons and language used in the details of the program, this also looks like a partnership with Gazelle, the electronics recycling business that already has been doing a brisk business with iPhone and Android buy-backs. Gazelle makes the process very easy for the seller, and in most cases you'll get as much or more as you would if you sold your old electronics in an eBay auction.

Right now, however, AT&T iPhone 4s are fetching between $400 and $700 on eBay and even the 3GS is selling for between $200 and $400. You have to remember that since the AT&T iPhones are GSM-based, they are a very hot commodity in many markets around the world. So while a guaranteed $200 for your iPhone may sound good, you can probably do better by selling it yourself. eBay and Gazelle are banking on you taking the easy way out so they can clean up your phone and sell it for a profit. Wouldn't it be better to put that cash in your pocket instead of theirs?

Details of the eBay offer say the promotion runs from Feb. 8 to Feb. 22 but could be extended. Pricing is valid only for devices that power on and are in fully functional condition, do not have any broken, cracked or missing components or any liquid damage. The devices must have a fully functional battery.

If you want to sell your iPhone on eBay I wouldn't wait too long. The demand is high now and as details about the next iPhone begin to leak out (they always do) the demand and price most certainly will drop.
