Facebook was down about 40 minutes, rumored new feature likely installed
Happy 4th of July! About 8:15 Monday morning, Facebook went down for many people and the fireworks began on Twitter. With Facebook junkies unable to communicate on the popular social media site, they turned to Twitter which quickly began running at or over capacity due to the increased traffic.
I was checking my own Facebook account on my iPhone when this happened. I touched the screen and the app flipped around to the login screen but would not let me in. I then went to my MacBook and kept getting error messages saying my account was not available. Thinking I had been hacked, I checked downrightnow.com, a site that monitors the status the status of various other sites, and that confirmed Facebook was being reported as down by many.
Facebook plans to announce a new product on Wednesday, July 6 and it's rumored to be embedded video chat powered by Skype. My guess is they were taking down accounts today in waves to deploy this new feature in preparation for the launch. As I was finishing this blog post my account came back online, so the total downtime for me was about 40 minutes. Now to hunt around for the new video feature!
