Free iOS apps at Starbucks now confirmed, showing up in Tampa Bay
A week ago I told you about a CNET report saying that Starbucks would be giving away iOS apps as part of their "Pick of the Week" program that has been in place for more than three years. Yesterday Starbucks confirmed with a blog post that the free apps program would begin today with the Shazam Encore music identification app that normally sells for $5.99 in the iTunes App Store. The next free app will be the SPY mouse game from Firemint and Electronic Arts and many gaming sites are calling it the next, great iPhone game.
Following those two apps they plan to distribute a song from the iTunes library. So it looks like the apps and songs will not be offered concurrently but rather, will alternate week to week.
I did a quick check today at two Starbucks stores in Tampa but neither had the cards and the employees at both stores weren't yet aware of the new program. Hopefully we'll be seeing the app cards in local Starbucks stores soon.
Woah, hold the phone! I was talking to the manager at the Starbucks where I was blogging about this and she dug around in the back to find the "Pick of the Week" cards for Shazam Encore. So now we know at least one Starbucks in Tampa is with the program. If you don't see the cards at your Starbucks, ask the manager and tell them the Gadget Guy knows they exist!
