Gingerbread update coming to AT&T Android phones soon

gingerbread1.jpgAT&T is rolling out a fresh batch of Gingerbread for their Android customers in the coming weeks. Too bad they haven't figured out a way to include the fresh-baked smell that accompanies the other kind of gingerbread.

In most cases all post-paid customers who purchased an Android smartphone introduced by AT&T in 2011 will receive a prompt for the update automatically for over-the-air (OTA) installation. In some cases, however, the size of the file needed to install the update will require the user to connect via WiFi or connect the phone to a PC for installation. The installation will update phones running Android 2.2 Froyo to 2.3 Gingerbread. Phones included in this update are:

  • HTC Inspire™ 4G
  • LG Phoenix™
  • Motorola ATRIX™ 4G
  • Pantech Crossover™
  • Samsung Captivate™ 4G
  • Samsung Infuse™ 4G

Beginning immediately and continuing over the next few weeks, Motorola ATRIX 4G users will receive a notification to install the update. To download the ATRIX update users must be connected via WiFi. In August, HTC Inspire 4G users will be notified that the update is available and can be downloaded when connected to a WiFi network. All AT&T smartphone users can access WiFi at any one of the company’s more than 26,000 WiFi hotspots at no cost, if needed.
A description of Gingerbread from the AT&T release:

Gingerbread delivers a number of improvements, such as user interface refinements, refined copy/paste functionality and speed enhancements. The upgrade offers improved power management that offers a more active role in managing applications in addition to an improved on-screen keyboard with multi-touch support that makes typing faster and more accurate.

Currently the only Gingerbread phone AT&T has in their lineup is the HTC Status, which was released a few weeks ago.
