Having trouble updating to iOS 5? Here are some things you can try

ios-5.jpgAfter hours and hours of trying to upgrade my iPad to iOS 5 I finally met success. I was able to download the firmware file for my AT&T iPad 2 and tried several times to manually restore it, but it kept giving me various error messages. People all over the Internet are reporting these problems and they probably are related to the Apple servers being overwhelmed with traffic. This makes me wonder how well the things are going to work with millions of people syncing their iPhones to the iCloud servers EVERY DAY. But that's another story for the future, so let's concentrate on getting the iOS 5 update on your device.

First, Apple has a help document that gives you a lot of information about the error messages with suggested solutions for fixing the problem. For me, updating to the latest version of OS X Lion seemed to make the difference. A new update for Lion was released today.

Instead of trying to do the update process using the normal procedure in iTunes, you can use one of the links below to download the firmware file for your device manually. Once you have the file you then can manually tell iTunes to write the file to your device. To do that follow these steps:

  1. Backup your iOS device first using iTunes. THIS IS IMPORTANT
  2. Make sure you have iTunes 10.5 and update it if you don't
  3. Connect your device to your Mac or PC, then select it under "Devices" in the left column of iTunes
  4. Hold down the "Option" key (Mac) or the "Alt key (Windows) then click on the "Restore" button
  5. Navigate to the iOS 5 firmware file you downloaded earlier, select it and hit "Open" or "Return"

Now follow the instructions and hopefully you will install the update. First your iOS device will be completely wiped, then it will be restored using the new firmware file. After that you can then do a restore again, using the backup you should have made before the update. This will restore your apps, settings and other data.

Good luck!
