Honeycomb 3.1 coming to Android tablets soon, Google TV later
Google announced the release of Honeycomb 3.1 for Android tablets at the Google I/O event yesterday. In addition so a number of improvements and fixes, the update includes many new features. Google's new Movie app is included, allowing streaming rentals of thousands of movies on the Android Market that can be played across multiple devices. This will provide an experience similar to Netflix on the iOS platform, which has not been available for Android users.
The update provides support for a large number of USB devices including XBox 360 and PlayStation 3 controllers. Host Mode lets you transfer photos from your phone directly to your tablet. There is a new video editing app called Movie Studio, a new Books app and more.
Initially reports were that the update would be pushed out to Motorola Xoom tablets on the Verizon network immediately, but now it seems that isn't true. Some users have reported getting the update and others have contacted Motorola to find out the update is still a few weeks away. My Motorola Xoom has not received the update as of today. As soon as it does I'll start testing out the new features and will share what I find. The update also is supposed to push out to Google TV devices sometime this summer.
