Hooked on Skylanders? There's more on the way
Skylanders by Activision, which debuted in October 2011, has become a huge seller this year with more than $200 million in sales. Available on multiple platforms -- PS3, Wii, XBox, DS3, and PC -- the clever game uses a plastic USB-connected "portal of power" that reads RFID tags in Skylanders action figures which appear in the game. There are 32 characters (plus some special edition versions) are available now, and more are coming in October with the release of Skylanders Giants.
The franchise is thriving, and has many kids addicted. Like with Pokemon, the gamers will want to collect them all. My 9-year-old has become a big Skylanders fan. Each time we visit Target, we make an obligatory stop in the gaming department to look for that last elusive character in his collection -- Wham-Shell. (It's available at Amazon.com for an inflated price.)
The new Skylanders Giants game is due out Oct. 21. It's expected to be very popular, so avid fans should preorder a copy if possible.
Meanwhile, check out this video by Wired, above, with a great behind-the-scenes look at Toys for Bob, the game's creator.
