HTC announces 7-inch Android Flyer tablet with online gaming

HTC put their hat in the tablet ring today with an announcement of the 7-inch Flyer Android tablet. The Flyer is equipped with a 1.5Ghz single-core processor, an aluminum uni-body, 1024 x 600 resolution, high-speed HSPA+ wireless capabilities and a new version of HTC Sense that is optimized for tablets.

The Flyer also includes 5-megapixel rear-facing and 1.3-megapixel front-facing cameras and memory expansion through a microSD card. The new version of HTC Sense features a 3D home screen and a "unique carousel of widgets." Also included are Flash 10 and HTML 5 support. Also included is HTC Scribe technology for pen-based activities like signing documents, note-taking and drawing.

For entertainment the Flyer will include HTC Watch, an on-demand streaming video service, and OnLive mobile cloud gaming. The described software package looks appealing, especially since online gaming and streaming video are two things for which Android users have been waiting. The HTC Flyer is scheduled to ship in the second quarter of this year.

Early reports from those who have seen the Flyer at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain indicate that it's a pretty chunky piece of hardware with a good deal of weight for a 7-inch tablet.

With Apple's Steve Jobs saying the 7-inch size doesn't make sense for a tablet and indicating they won't be making one, I think we'll be seeing more tablets in this size in the future. None of the 10-inch tablets unveiled so far seem worthy of dethroning the iPad so the kingdom is wide-open for a King in the 7-inch format.
