If stairs were fun, would you skip the escalator?
When I'm traveling, I'm an escalator kind of guy. I'm usually pulling one bag on wheels full of gadgets and carrying another on my shoulder, plus my knees are just worn out (having surgery next week on my right one), so stairs are not a good choice. But if I found a set of stairs like the ones in the video below, I might suck it up and play a bit.
At the Odenplan subway plaza in Stockholm, Sweden a group of people from thefuntheory.com converted a staircase into a working piano keyboard. The stairs were right next to an escalator. What did they find? Sixty-six percent more people chose the stairs over the escalators. I would have been one of them.
It kind of reminds me of that famous toy store scene in the movie "Big," with Tom Hanks. I would SO be playing some chopsticks on those stairs.
There are other, similar experiments at thefuntheory.com, which is sponsored by Volkswagen and "dedicated to the thought that something as simple as fun is the easiest way to change people’s behaviour for the better. Be it for yourself, for the environment, or for something entirely different, the only thing that matters is that it’s change for the better."
