The iPad 2 is the tablet to get, unless you have an iPad 1
To make my video review of the iPad 2, I decided to shoot some of it with the iPad 2. That's right, all the video you see of me was made with my iPad 2, propped up on a music stand and connected to a wireless mic. I was relieved the iPhone mic adapters from KV Connection worked, even though the plug wouldn't go all the way in because of the new curved edges on the iPad 2. The video quality is pretty bad, not anywhere near as good as the iPhone 4. I was sitting near a window and used a light too, but the shadow areas still have a lot of digital noise. The still cameras are even worse. Sample photos are in the video.
But hey, I'm not complaining. If I had to shoot a video and all I had was my iPad, I could do it! But really, thinking of the iPad as a camera is really kind of silly because it's just too big (watch the video for an appearance by a famous, special guest photographer) That's why I'm not too worried about the image quality. Now as a video conferencing device the iPad is great, and I suspect that's exactly why Apple did not announce any megapixel specs. They don't want you to think of the iPad primarily as a camera either.
Overall, the iPad 2 is a large improvement over the original iPad. It's slimmer, lighter and a lot faster, kind of like a marathon runner at the end of one year of training. The original iPad is still in the race but the iPad 2 just pulled out in front to stay (at least for now).
But if you're one of the millions of people who have the original iPad, many of whom just got them in December, is it improved enough to justify an upgrade? No, it's not, unless you can pass your original iPad to a family member and get the upgrade for yourself. Because Apple did not increase the price of the iPad 2, if you try to sell your iPad you'll lose a lot of money.
Watch the video for more details and some head-to-head comparison tests that will show you how much faster the iPad 2 is and maybe that will help you decide. No rush on making a decision, though. The iPad 2 is sold out everywhere and the Apple Store currently shows a wait time of up to five weeks.
