iPhone 3GS at AT&T for $49 beginning Friday, Verizon coming?

The iPhone 3GS will be offered by AT&T for $49 both online and in stores beginning Friday, AT&T announced today. This new price is good for new customers who sign a 2-year agreement and for existing customers who are upgrade-eligible. New contracts require a $39.99 or higher voice plan and a minimum $15 a month data plan. A note on the press release says Apple's pricing may be different. The current price is $99 for an 8GB phone.

With anticipated news about the launch of the iPhone on Verizon, this looks like a fire sale to get rid of stock. Let's see if Apple drops the price too. The Apple 3GS is an excellent phone, especially with the iOS 4.2 operating system. If you've been wanting to jump into the iPhone world on a budget, now's your chance. I'm sure these phones won't last long at that price.
