Is the iPhone really coming to Verizon?

October

We've heard it before, several times in fact, and each time the web lights up with the news. It's nearly as famous as Chicken Little's "the sky is falling" now, and each time I hear it all I can say is "yeah, right." Well, here we go again. Today The Wall Street Journal reported the iPhone is coming to Verizon early next year. Verizon faithful can you say "hallelujah?"

The WSJ survey asking if people would switch to Verizon if they sold the iPhone had 73% saying they would. In New York AT&T service is reported to be very spotty for iPhone users.

The truth is the Android platform is making a serious run at the Smartphone market and recent sales reports show Android as the top selling Smartphone OS in the U.S. for the last six months. So maybe that's enough to convince Apple they need to open things up a bit. I have many friends who wanted iPhones but now use Androids because of their dissatisfaction with AT&T's service. I've been with AT&T since the first generation iPhone and haven't had a problem, not even during "antennagate." So to me this Verizon thing is no big deal.

It's a very big deal to many others, however, and I predict we'll see a bunch of Android paperweights when and if Verizon does get the iPhone. All those people who really wanted iPhones but talked themselves out of them in favor of going with Verizon will lose their loyalty real fast when they finally can get what they wanted. Perhaps that was Apple's plan all along.
