Microsoft launches Windows 8 today

Have you downloaded Microsoft's new Windows 8 operating system that's available today? Or are you still hesitant to commit (with flashback to Vista)?

To help you decide, PC World used a "guinea pig" PC to show you the step-by-step of the download so you'll get an idea of what goes on when you upgrade. also has a set of videos taking you through the process.

Meanwhile, here's the buzz on Windows 8:

Gizmodo: Using Windows 8 is pleasant, especially if you don't have to do anything in a particular hurry.

PCWorld: Windows 8 isn’t for everyone. If you’re mostly a desktop PC user comfortable with Windows 7, upgrading to Windows 8 is probably not worthwhile. If you’re a mobile user who needs easy access to the complete Microsoft ecosystem, including SkyDrive, Windows 8 is definitely a good fit.

CNet: Microsoft makes an aggressive, forward-thinking, and bold statement for the future of PCs with Windows 8, and vast security and speed improvements more than justify the $40 upgrade price.

Wired: The new version of Windows sees Microsoft tucking the old, desktop-focused Windows skin into its back pocket, and instead donning a colorful, touch-friendly suit of tiles.   ...  Windows 8 will take effort to get used to, and not all users want to learn a new operating system and interface.

The Verge: Windows 8 is a rebirth, a "reimagining" of Windows and the entire Microsoft brand. It's also the single riskiest project that Microsoft has ever embarked upon — a bet from Redmond that users can adapt to a new way of computing.
