Netflix nixes Qwikster, goes back to combined streaming and DVD rentals

Depending on how you look at it, Netflix is either just entirely confused about their future or they're finally listening and reacting to their customer base. I sure hope it's the latter. Yesterday I canceled my DVDs-through-the-mail service with Netflix and just now I received an email saying to forget they ever said anything about Qwikster and just carry on. Too late! Qwikster was to be their new, independent DVD rental service.

Talk about some serious Waffle House action. I doubt they're going to gain back many (if any) of the customers they lost, or retain those who were on the fence, following this move. The email also says the July price increase was necessary but they are "now done with price changes." Yeah, for now at least. Here's a statement from the Netflix blog by CEO Reed Hastings.

In other Netflix news, Vizio announced today they will be issuing a firmware update for their sub-$300, 8-inch Android tablet that will include a new Netflix app for streaming over WiFI. As one of the least expensive Android tablets available at $269.99 on the Vizio site, it's also a universal remote for Vizio TVs. It's sure to be a popular item during the holiday season, but will it help Netflix regain some of the swagger they once had? We'll see.
