New 11.6-inch MacBook Air "netbook" on the horizon?
Last week Apple Computer announced a "Back to the Mac" event that will be held at their Cupertino, CA campus on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 10 am PST. As always, special invitations went out and then the speculation began. The invitations contained an image of the Apple logo with a partial image of a lion. A new verison of OSX perhaps? New MacBooks?
Last week AppleInsider cited sources saying two new MacBook Air models would be announced at the event. Today Cult of Mac has come forward with more details including a mock-up. The bullet points? Thinner, faster, smaller, more ports, more expandability and better battery life. The usual stuff.
There's also quite a bit of discussion about these new models being quite a bit cheaper than the original MacBook Air which starts at $1499, with some saying the 11-inch version could be as low as $999. That makes no sense really, unless Apple is prepared to drop the entry-level MacBook price to $799. Doing that puts the MacBook in a spot that might compete with the iPad. So expect the new MacBook Air prices to be in line with the the current price structure.
I'll be watching for the real announcement on Wednesday and will post here as soon I have the goods.
