New Amazon Student iOS app aimed at college students
We're currently shopping for college textbooks in the Gadget Guy household as we prepare for our first bird to leave the nest. I had already been looking at textbooks on Amazon.com and now it looks like Amazon has made things even easier with the launch of the new Amazon Student app for iOS devices.
The app mostly caters to the purchase of textbooks but can be used for other Amazon purchases too. It has a built-in barcode scanner for instant price checks on textbooks. The scanner also can be used to scan and trade-in textbooks, movies, games and electronics for Amazon gift cards. If you decide to trade-in an item Amazon will pay the shipping.
Students also can sign up for a free 6-month trial of the Amazon Student program which offers the same shipping benefits as Amazon Prime. Those benefits include free 2-day shipping on eligible items and $3.99 overnight shipping per item. Amazon Prime also includes access to a free library of approximately 5,000 streaming videos but it wasn't clear if the Amazon Student membership includes that too. After the trial period Amazon Student is $39 a year.
Amazon says students who shop in their textbook store can save up to 90% on used textbooks and 30% on new ones, then get 70% of their purchase price back when they trade them in through the book trade-in program. They also offer Kindle books at up to 80% off.
The Amazon Student app is free and designed for the iPhone and iPod Touch but it also will work on iPads.
