SocialEyes brings group video chat to Facebook

March

A new social video chat service launches today both as a standalone site and as an app with Facebook integration. SocialEyes, developed by RealNetworks, not only lets you connect for one-to-one video chat with multiple people but it also allows you to conference groups for video chat in a multi-paned interface window. Just select the people you want in the conference and in one click they're all connected. The interface is set up to accommodate up to nine people in a video conference at the same time.

Additionally you can use SocialEyes for traditional text chat, to send recorded video messages and also to share links. screen_shot_2011-02-23_at_10.54.47_pm.png.scaled500.pngLinks shared for video content, including live streams, can be viewed within the SocialEyes interface. Users can create public and private groups or join already formed groups to chat about various topics around the world. A Feed tab provides real-time updates on group activity, recent call history and shared links.

SocialEyes can be used as a standalone web site service or within Facebook as an app and in both flavors it utilizes Facebook integration and linking to your friends list. It also can be used to chat with people outside of your Facebook network.

This will be very popular with the Facebook crowd and it adds a whole new dimension to the social media landscape. Video chat is nothing new and I'm sure people have been using Skype in conjunction with Facebook to achieve a similar result, but full Facebook integration is the hot ticket. The hard part will be keeping unsolicited and inappropriate content from ruining it.

Several sites are reporting RealNetworks is readying an iPad app for SocialEyes. Since SocialEyes needs a camera and Flash support, the hinted iPad app indicates reports of cameras on the iPad 2 are accurate. With about 30 hours to go until Apple's planned event, we'll know soon enough.
