August

There were lots of announcements from Sony in their presentation at IFA trade show in Berlin on Wednesday. Here are some highlights:

HDTV

bravia84i.jpgAmong the biggest, literally in the industry right now, is the new 84-inch Bravia 4K LCD TV (KD-84X9005). The much-anticipated TV has a 3840 x 2160 4K LCD panel with 4 times the resolution of full high definition. It has the super-resolution high picture quality engine (4K X-Reality PRO) which, Sony says, can convert any content to 4K quality. Sony expects the global release of this Bravia by the holiday season this year. Sony hasn't announced the prices for the U.S. market yet.

Phones

Three new Xperia Android phones are coming soon: the flagship Xperia T, Xperia V and Xperia J.

The Xperia T comes with a 4.6-inch display,  runs on a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and is 4G LTE capable. Its 13MP camera has a sleep-to-snap function where you can take a photo with a push of a key instead of fumbling for an app. The device can connect to other NFC (Near Field Communication) peripherals with a touch with the phone.

The Xperia V is a bit smaller at 4.3-inch screen, but also has the 13MP camera with 4G LTE capability and is waterproof up to IP55 and IP57.

The Xperia J is considered the "budget" phone of the bunch, with a 4-inch screen and a 5MP camera.

Wearable camera

The camera uses the Carl Zeiss 170-degree wide angle lens, has an image stabilizer to reduce vibrations and Exmore R CMOS sensor to shoot in almost any light. It  has Wi-Fi capability so you can send the footage to your PC. If you want to change settings, you can use your smartphone to control the camera remotely. It comes with adhesive mounts and a rugged waterproof case good for up to 60 meters in depth. Optional are waterproof head mount kit, wearable headband or handlebar mount. Sony is planning on having a viewer for the Action Cam, so you can use it as a regular camcorder.

PC and tablet

xperiatablets.jpgSony's new tablet falls under the Xperia lineup. The Xperia Tablet S uses a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor and runs on Android 4.0 with a 9.4-inch screen. The splash-proof (not waterproof) tablet comes with a pre-installed remote control app, so you can use it as a universal remote for your home entertainment center. The price ranges from $399.99 to $599.99 depending on configuration. It will be available around Sept. 7.

The Vaio Tap 20 is a fusion between a PC and a tablet. The "tabletop PC" is a 20-inch panel that can sit desktop style, lie flat or tilting. The built-in battery makes it portable. Tap 20 takes advantage of the new Windows 8 capabilities with its 10-point multitouch screen, so families can use it for multiplayer games.

Another "hybrid" is the Vaio Duo 11, which is a laptop that works also as a tablet. A keyboard is built in and you can slide the screen up to access the keyboard. Or use it as a slate without keyboard.
