Throwable panoramic ball camera is a game-changer

ball-camera_0.jpegEvery once in awhile a new gadget surfaces that just blows my mind, and this throwable ball panoramic camera is one of those things. Equipped with 36, 2-megapixel mobile phone camera modules, the camera is designed to make a full 360-degree sphere panorama when thrown in the air. An accelerometer detects when the ball has reached the highest point in it's flight and the cameras are triggered automatically. Then it's just a matter of plugging in a USB cable and viewing the interactive panorama in a spherical panoramic viewer that requires no stitching. Check out the video.

The camera was developed by Jonas Pfeil, Kristian Hildebrand, Carsten Gremzow, Bernd Bickel and Marc Alexa and currently is only a prototype but that won't last long. The possibilities are really fun to think about. Can you imagine having an NFL star walk out on the 50-yard line at the next Super Bowl to toss this ball in the air for a birds-eye view of the hoopla? How about use at news scenes or for real-estate applications? This really demystifies the process of making interactive panoramas because if you can throw a ball, you can be a panoramic photographer.
