Verizon network OK a week after iPhone launch, but has it really been tested?

February

It's been a week since the surprisingly calm launch of the iPhone on Verizon and although Verizon has stated they broke internal sales records with their pre-sale and first-day sale of the device, actual sales data hasn't been released. A report at gigaom.com references estimates saying that as many as 500,000 iPhones were sold during Verizon's pre-sale to existing customers and a report at dailyfinance.com estimates between 90 and 100,00 new users left AT&T to have the iPhone on Verizon's network. So that's an estimated total of 600,000 new iPhone users on Verizon's network with the large part of them being users who were already their customers.

Using data from Compuware Gomez, another report at gigaom.com states that data performance on Verizon's network has remained virtually unchanged since the iPhone launch. It's worth noting, however, that AT&T had more than 9-million iPhone activations in the last two quarters of 2010 alone. So with 600,000 new iPhone users on Verizon, many of whom were already part of Verizon's customer base, it seems the real test for their network has yet to come. The launch of the next iPhone this Summer will likely provide the opportunity for that test.

The folks at gigaom.com also are reporting that while Verizon is handling the traffic from their new iPhone customers well, their data speeds are lagging way behind those of AT&T which were twice as fast in recent tests. They do point out, however, that this is partly due to network limits on Verizon's network. For the full report, including information on the actual upload and download speeds from tests performed by ookla.com (the folks who operate speedtest.net) on both networks, please click here.
