Vizio to reveal Android tablet and phone before CES
The CES tablet computer showdown is already starting to heat up. Remember that tablet I referenced in my previous post about CES, the one that appeared in the Rose Bowl TV commercial? Well, late yesterday the Wall Street Journal reported Vizio will soon reveal an 8-inch tablet and a Vizio-branded phone, both based on the Android platform. The phone is said to have a 5-megapixel rear camera and a front-facing camera too, similar to the iPhone 4 and the HTC EVO. The tablet will have a front-facing camera for video conferencing and three speakers, according to the report. The devices will be called the the Via Phone and Via Tablet.
This is the first of many tablet announcements this week, although I don't expect we'll hear anything about a new iPad until after CES. It's more Steve Jobs' style to jump in at the end, after everyone else has shown their cards, to go for a "winner takes all" move. Still, this is getting interesting and more competition is a good thing.
