Mark Recchi's apparent power play goal with 37.1 seconds left in the first period of Friday's game with the Flyers was ruled good by the on-ice officials. But the review by NHL officials in the league's Toronto offices was that Recchi kicked in the puck. That wiped out the goal and left the game tied 1-1.

Recchi was seen mouthing, "It's a (expletive) joke" after the ruling, and the crowd booed long and loud. But Mike Murphy, the head of NHL's hockey operations department, which takes care of all such rulings, said the puck was knocked in with a "distinct kicking motion," which automatically nullifies the goal.

As Murphy said, "What you have is a distinct kicking motion by Recchi whether it was intentional or not. What took us so long was we were looking to see if he got it with his stick, We felt it was a distinct kicking motion so we overruled the call on the ice."
