Gilroy wins Hobey Baker Award

The price for defenseman Matt Gilroy probably just went up, as the Boston University captain was named winner of this season's Hobey Baker Award, given to the nation's best college player. Gilroy, 24, will be an unrestricted free agent after his season is over. He leads BU into Saturday's NCAA championship game against Miami (Ohio).

The Lightning has not made secret about its interest in Gilroy, who is coveted for his ability to move the puck and pass from the defensive zone. He visited Tampa last summer, when he was deciding whether to return to BU for his senior season, and he has been visited by associate coach Mike Sullivan.

Because of his age, Gilroy, whose family advisor is Kent Hughes, Vinny Lecavalier's agent, is not subject to any entry-level salary parameters.
