Would Steve Yzerman really leave the Red Wings? Some say yes, some say no
What would it take for Steve Yzerman to leave the comfort of the Red Wings, a team he has been with as a player and executive for 27 seasons, and take a job as, say, Lightning general manager? Scotty Bowman, who coached Yzerman from 1993-2002, said don’t hold your breath.
“I’d be surprised if he leaves,” Bowman said Friday. “He’s like the son to the owner. He’s been there nearly 30 years, and I think he’s in line to move up the chain.” ... Read more

Former Tampa Bay Lightning captain Tim Taylor said he has never been prouder of his daughter, Brittany, 15, who is fighting to overcome Stage III A Hodgkins Lymphoma.
"It was devastating," Taylor said from his Stratford, Ontario, home. "Our lives were turned upside-down. But for me, this was my most defining moment, to see your daughter in a different light, to see how strong she is." ... Read more
Could Steve Yzerman be the Lightning's GM? NFL's Seahawks say Leiweke won't be the CEO
Despite saying on April 10 that he is not a candidate for the Tampa Bay Lightning's CEO job, Tod Leiweke's name keeps popping up. On Wednesday, the web site for Canada's TSN, said the Lightning and Leiweke, the CEO of the NFL's Seahawks, were close to finalizing a deal. But Seahawks spokesman Dave Pearson said there is "no truth" to the report.
TSN also said Tampa Bay has received permission from the Red Wings to talk to vice president Steve Yzerman about the general manager position. Neither the Lightning nor the Red Wings would comment. Former Wild GM Doug Risebrough already has stated his interest and likely has had preliminary talks. There also is speculation Maple Leafs assistant GM Dave Nonis could be in the mix. Nonis did not return a phone call.
So, the only person on the record in all of this was Pearson, who was blunt in dismissing the report about Leiweke. ... Read more
Tampa Bay Lightning's Kurtis Foster among finalists for Masterton Trophy
The Lightning's Kurtis Foster is one of three finalists for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, which recognizes perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. Foster led Lightning defensemen in scoring and posted career bests in games, assists and points one year after a career-threatening fall into the end boards resulted in a broken left femur.
Jed Ortmeyer of the San Jose Sharks and Jose Theodore of the Washington Capitals are the other finalists.

Tampa Bay Lightning captain Vinny Lecavalier: I still can be an elite player
Tampa Bay Lightning captain Vinny Lecavalier has a lot to look forward to this offseason, first and foremost being the birth of his first child next month, a daughter, with longtime girlfriend Caroline Portelance. But Lecavalier, who turned 30 on April 21, also has a comeback on his mind, saying in his exit interview after the season that he still has what it takes to be an elite player in the league. Lecavalier's goal production has slipped every years since he won the 2007 Rocket Richard Trophy with 52. And his 24 goals this season were his fewest since he had 20 in 2001-02. ... Read more

An opportunity, an education for Tom Kurvers, the Tampa Bay Lightning's acting GM
Tom Kurvers is keeping the general manager's seat warm for the Tampa Bay Lightning. The team's assistant general manager has moved up to handle the day-to-day running of the organization while Tampa Bay searches for someone to take the place of fired GM Brian Lawton. Kurvers has been in this position before. As the Coyotes director of player personnel, he kept things running smoothly after the 2006-07 season, when hockey ops head Cliff Fletcher and GM Mike Barnett were fired. He held that spot for almost two months until Don Maloney was hired at the end of May 2007. "But this is more official," said Kurvers, 47, whose 11 years in Phoenix also included seven as a pro scout. "This is the set-up for now and everyone is aware of it. There's nothing hidden." Including that Kurvers will be back in his old job when a new GM takes over. ... Read more

Tampa Bay Lightning center Steven Stamkos: "People are going to expect a lot"
If Tampa Bay Lightning star center Steven Stamkos, 20, feels overwhelmed by his second-season success, he did not sound like it during his exit interview. Earning the Rocket Richard Trophy by tying Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby with a league-best 51 goals. Finishing fifth in the league with 95 points. Putting together a team-record 18-game points streak during which former coach Rick Tocchet said Stamkos might have been among the best players in the game. It all adds up to a lot of expectations for next season, though he has to first get through the May 7-23 world championship, playing for Team Canada. ... Read more
Tampa Bay Lightning LW Marty St. Louis: "I feel bad for Tocchet. I wish him the best"
Tampa Bay Lightning left wing Marty St. Louis made a bit of news earlier this week when he seemed to say he might ask for a trade if he does not believe the team's rebuilding effort this summer turns the Lightning into a playoff contender. It's not a difficult equation. St. Louis will turn 35 in June. He has one year left on his contract. And as he said, "I'm not getting any younger." But St. Louis had much more to say that day. He spoke of former coach Rick Tocchet, the thrill of playing next to Steven Stamkos and how difficult was a third consecutive season out of the playoffs. Also, an interesting silence concerning fired general manager Brian Lawton.
Here is his entire interview: ... Read more
