When goalie Ben Bishop got hurt Tuesday night, backup Andrei Vasilevskiy was asked if he's ready to take over if the injury was for an prolonged period.

"That's why I'm here," Vasilevskiy said.

Vasilevskiy will get his first chance as an extended No. 1 as Bishop is out 3-4 weeks with a lower-body injury, the Lightning announced today. Kristers Gudlevskis was called up from AHL Syracuse Wednesday and is expected to back up Vasilevskiy for Thursday's game against the Blues at Amalie Arena.

It's certainly a bad break for Bishop, who left Tuesday's game with eight minutes left in the first period after making a right pad save. But it could have been worse, a long-term injury. With the Christmas break, which extends from Saturday until Wednesday, that's takes a way a week of this recovery.

Three-to-four weeks puts Bishop's return in middle to late January. The trade deadline is March 1, and Bishop was expected to be a hot topic of speculation.
