Would Steve Yzerman really leave the Red Wings? Some say yes, some say no

What would it take for Steve Yzerman to leave the comfort of the Red Wings, a team he has been with as a player and executive for 27 seasons, and take a job as, say, Lightning general manager? Scotty Bowman, who coached Yzerman from 1993-2002, said don’t hold your breath.

“I’d be surprised if he leaves,” Bowman said Friday. “He’s like the son to the owner. He’s been there nearly 30 years, and I think he’s in line to move up the chain.” ... Read more

Tampa Bay Lightning's contact with Pierre McGuire shows team looks for diverse options

The Lightning seems to be speaking to a lot of people about its CEO and general manager jobs. For good of the team, it's time for the Tampa Bay Lightning to fill positions at the top

It probably is too harsh to say the Lightning has steered without a rudder since the April 12 firing of general manager Brian Lawton. But it is not too harsh to say the recent storm over whether to pay for Stephane Veilleux’s surgery is a good example of why new owner Jeff Vinik needs to finally hire a new GM and chief executive officer. ... Is Steve Yzerman the front-runner to be Tampa Bay Lightning GM? What day is it?

Is Steve Yzerman "keen" on the Lightning's GM job as AOL Fanhouse reported Wednesday, or is the Red Wings vice president more inclined to stay in Detroit as other media outlets have reported? The Tampa Bay Lightning finally will announce its new general manager at a 3 p.m. news conference, and all indications are that it is Steve Yzerman, who is believed to have received a five-year deal. The team has been very tight-lipped about the whole thing, but it let slip that the announcement is "worth the wait." Unless someone has slipped under the radar, the biggest name out there is the Red Wings vice president. ... In the end, this probably will end up as no more than a blip in the larger makeover of the Tampa Bay Lightning's front office, but it was interesting that owner Jeff Vinik departed from his initial plan to hire a CEO before a general manager when on Tuesday he hired GM Steve Yzerman. ... Read more
