AHL's Guy Boucher is reported to be the new coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning

When Steve Yzerman took over as general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning, he hinted that he is willing to go outside the normal list of retreads when finding the team's new head coach. It sounds like that is what happened as reports out of Montreal say Guy Boucher, who has one year experience as a pro coach with AHL Hamilton, will be Tampa Bay's new bench boss. ... Jacques Demers, Pat Quinn like Guy Boucher choice

Guy Boucher, who spent last season with the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American Hockey League, the Canadiens' top minor-league affiliate, is expected to be named the Lightning's coach sometime in the next few days, according to multiple reports. Media reports say he turned down the coaching job in Columbus on Monday to accept a four-year deal with the Lightning.

This would be Boucher's first NHL job, once he and the team iron out the final details. He would also be the youngest head coach in the league. ... Read more

Though the team continued to stay mum Wednesday, it appears the Lightning will officially announce the hiring of Guy Boucher as coach Thursday at an 11 a.m. news conference.

Boucher, 38, will be the franchise’s eighth coach, following Terry Crisp, Jacques Demers, Steve Ludzik, John Tortorella, Barry Melrose and Rick Tocchet. Rick Paterson was an interim coach. ... Read more

Sharing new general manager Steve Yzerman's vision, Guy Boucher was introduced Thursday as new coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Tampa Bay Lightning goes with another first-time coach, but this time the GM has his back

Back in the Tampa Bay area after a vacation week took me away just as the Tampa Bay Lightning named Guy Boucher as its new head coach.  While watching the fun from afar, the first thing I thought of was that the team was replacing one first-time coach with another. But it also struck me how the circumstances are completely different. In this scenario, general manager Steve Yzerman will have Boucher's back. ... Read more

Mathieu Darche says Tampa Bay Lightning coach Guy Boucher is "too good to be true"

As has just about every reporter who covered the Tampa Bay Lightning's signing of Guy Boucher as its new head coach, I spoke to Mathieu Darche to get some insight. Darche, who played for the Lightning in 2007-08, and played for Boucher last season for AHL Hamilton, said Boucher is detailed, smart and driven. He also said that more than X's and O's, it is Boucher's ability to handle people that is his greatest quality.

"It's hard to explain," Darche said. "I know he sounds too good to be true when you hear me talk about him, but that's the way he is." ... Read more

GM Steve Yzerman says Tampa Bay Lightning likely to carry eight defensemen

With the signing of Mike Lundin on Tuesday, the Tampa Bay Lightning has eight defensemen with one-way contracts for next season. It might seem a bit much. Most teams generally suit up six blue-liners per game. But general manager Steve Yzerman said there is a good chance Tampa Bay will carry eight defensemen on the NHL roster. ... Read more

Tampa Bay Lightning coach Guy Boucher says more defensemen = more options

Thought it was interesting when Tampa Bay Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman said coach Guy Boucher likes game-day rosters with seven defensemen instead of the usual six. The topic came up after Yzerman said he likely will carry eight defensemen on next season's roster, in part because wants to evaluate on the NHL level some of his younger defensemen -- such as Mike Lundin, Matt Smaby and Matt Lashoff -- who have one-way contracts and are under contract for only one year.

Boucher had a busy day Wednesday as he talked to various people with the team about how he wants things done and set up next season in the locker room and offices under the St. Pete Times Forum, so it took some time to track him down to ask about it. But Boucher has some definite reasons why he likes using seven defensemen (and, consequently, only 11 forwards instead of 12). It won't happen all the time, he said, but given how his own players are playing and the opponent, it really does create options. ... Read more

AHL Hamilton GM rumored to be candiate for Lightning's assistant GM job

Just something to keep an eye on: According to Montreal's La Presse, Julien Brisebois, the Canadiens vice president of hockey operations and the general manager of its AHL affiliate in Hamilton, Ontario, is on a short list of candidates to join the Lightning as an assistant general manager. This would be somewhat of a coup for Tampa Bay as Brisebois apparently is highly regarded by the Habs and is their capologist. He also is very familiar with Lightning coach Guy Boucher, who was hired away from Hamilton.
