Tampa Bay Lightning signs James Wright to a three-year contract

Good thing we wrote about James Wright for today's paper. The Tampa Bay Lightning announced it signed the forward to a three-year, entry-level contract. Nice story about a prospect who came into camp completely off the radar but forced the team to make a commitment.

Basically, if the Lightning wants, it will have up to nine regular-season games to decide whether or not to send Wright back to Vancouver of the Western Hockey League and slide the contract to next season.

How does signing James Wright muddle the fight for spots on the Lightning's bottom two lines?

It appears rookie left wing James Wright gets to stay, for now, with the Tampa Bay Lightning

Here is why the 10th game for Tampa Bay Lightning rookie left wing James Wright is so important: If he plays that game, his contract counts for this season. Regardless of whether he is eventually sent back to juniors (and he can still be sent back), a 10th game means he counts one year as a pro. That is key when calculating when a player becomes a free agent.

Having said that, all indications are that Wright, 19, the 117th overall pick of the 2008 draft who has earned a spot on a line with Vinny Lecavalier and Marty St. Louis, and who has been perhaps the nicest story of the season so far, is on schedule to play his 10th game Thursday against the Senators.

Wright practiced with the team Tuesday, and coach Rick Tocchet said he expects Wright will be in the lineup. ... Read more

Measuring the value of Tampa Bay Lightning right wing Marty St. Louis with assists

Here's an interesting stat about Tampa Bay Lightning right wing Marty St. Louis: Of his 33 assists, which are tied for second in the league, 23 are primary assists. That means St. Louis' pass directly led to a goal.

What can we read into that about how St. Louis is playing? ... Read more

Jeff Halpern, ahead of schedule, is back in the lineup tonight for the Tampa Bay Lightning

Just yesterday, Tampa Bay Lightning coach Rick Tocchet said he believed center Jeff Halpern would not be ready to play until Thursday's game with the Panthers. But Halpern, who has missed five games with a lower-body injury (not including Friday night's partial game in New Jersey) will play tonight against the Flyers. ... Read more

Tampa Bay Lightning sends James Wright back to WHL Vancouver

The Tampa Bay Lightning sent forward James Wright back to juniors. The move makes room on the roster for center Nate Thompson, who the team picked up on waivers Thursday from the Islanders. James Wright added muscle, confidence heading into Tampa Bay Lightning camp

Got to say there is just something about James Wright you root for. The center is considered a long, long shot to make the Tampa Bay Lightning heading into training camp. But he always will be one of the nicest stories of last season and it is good to see him parlaying his 48 games with the Lightning in 2009-10 into some success. ...
