Line of Marty St. Louis, Steven Stamkos and Ryan Malone seems primed to pick up where it left off

There was plenty to like at Monday's two scrimmages at the Ice Sports Forum. A lot of the prospects, who were pitted against the NHL players, showed a lot of why all of a sudden Tampa Bay's feeder system isn't as shallow as it once was.

Goaltender Jaroslav Janus, who is playing for a contract, was terrific in two games, stopping 25 of 28 shots; center James Wright had a goal and an assist and had six shots in the first of the two scrimmages in which he played; right wing Carter Ashton can't stop going to the net and had the hit of the day when he ran over 6-foot-7 defenseman Vladimir Mihalik; center Richard Panik did not get a point but had three shots on goal and showed some skill; left wing Alex Tanguay had three goals in his first-ever game action for the Lightning; and right wing Steve Downie wasn't bad playing with Tanguay and center Vinny Lecavalier. ... Big line changes for Tampa Bay Lightning: Vinny Lecavalier and Marty St. Louis back together

Guess Saturday night was just a tease because it looks like Vinny Lecavalier and Marty St. Louis will be playing together for the short-term anyway. The move was one of several made by coach Rick Tocchet after an 0-2 road trip in which the Lightning was outscored 11-2 and actually regressed a bit from the promise it showed earlier in the season.

Another significant move, Alex Tanguay was taken off Lecavalier's line. Neither Tanguay nor Lecavalier has a goal this season. Lecavalier hasn't scored in 14 games going back to last season. ... Read more

Tampa Bay Lightning plays "naked shootout" after Tuesday's practice; not quite what you think

For those of you into the team bonding thing, the Lightning's post-practice game of "naked breakaways" was a useful undertaking. Players watched intently as Marty St. Louis shed his jersey, his arm pads, leg pads, leggings and his skates before finally getting the puck past a goaltender; the last player to do so.

In other words, no one missed enough breakaways to get naked. But a good time was had by all as players cheered as teammates were forced to shed pieces of equipment.

Actually, the best line was thrown after Todd Fedoruk missed a breakaway and someone yelled at the gap-toothed left wing, "Take out the rest of your teeth." ... Read more

No goals in nine games for Marty St. Louis has the Tampa Bay Lightning right wing frustrated

The past nine games have been a bit of a tough stretch for Tampa Bay Lightning right wing Marty St. Louis with zero goals and a minus-5. He does have seven assists in that stretch, but for St. Louis that is not good enough.

And he's starting to feel the pressure, as well. ... Read more

Tampa Bay Lightning coach Rick Tocchet shuffles lines after Monday's mass benching

There actually was a bit of anticipation going out to practice today as the Tampa Bay Lightning licked its wounds from Monday's 3-0 loss to the Capitals and coach Rick Tocchet's benching of the top two lines for the final seven minutes or so of the game.

Not only were we interested in what Tocchet had to say after not addressing reporters after the game, we wanted to see what the new line combinations would be. And there were changes. ... Read more

Measuring the value of Tampa Bay Lightning right wing Marty St. Louis with assists

Here's an interesting stat about Tampa Bay Lightning right wing Marty St. Louis: Of his 33 assists, which are tied for second in the league, 23 are primary assists. That means St. Louis' pass directly led to a goal.

What can we read into that about how St. Louis is playing? ... Read more
