Tampa Bay Lightning assigns defenseman Matt Smaby to AHL Norfolk for conditioning

The Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday assigned defenseman Matt Smaby to AHL Norfolk on a conditioning assignment. Smaby has not played in the Lightning's first two games, and it was uncertain when he would get into the lineup.

A conditioning assignment can last no more than 14 days. While in Norfolk, Smaby will remain on Tampa Bay's 23-player roster. ... Read more

Smaby sent down; Tortorella said it felt a "little weird" to return

The re-shuffling in the Lightning's surplus on defense continued Friday, with D Matt Smaby sent down to AHL Norfolk for conditioning. Coach Rick Tocchet said Smaby, who has yet to play in a game this season partly due to the crowded blueline, could play a lot of minutes for Norfolk this weekend before re-joining the Lightning.

Though Tocchet said he wanted to get Smaby in a game next week, it could be tough, with D Mattias Ohlund close to a return. Ohlund won't play tonight, but said he's hoping to get back pretty soon. ... Read more

The teams had to use Friday’s lineups, which meant C Jeff Halpern, who on Saturday played his first game after healing from a lower-body injury, was back in the press box. D Andrej Meszaros, scratched Friday, played because D Matt Smaby is out with an upper-body injury sustained in Saturday’s loss to the Flyers. Smaby seemed to go shoulder first into the side boards after he got tangled up with Philadelphia’s Danny Briere. D Matt Smaby (concussion) will return to the lineup tonight against the Hurricanes after missing three games.

Smaby said he’s got his legs back after having to take some days off, and coach Rick Tocchet hopes he can give a spark. Tocchet said D Matt Walker will be out of the lineup to make room for Smaby.   

“(Smaby) started to play some good hockey for us (before he got hurt),” Tocchet said. “It’s one of those things, he’s fought through it. He’s a good kid.” ... Read more
