Tampa Bay Lightning's pursuit of Alex Tanguay seems stalled but not over, and other updates
What is the latest on the Tampa Bay Lightning's pursuit of Alex Tanguay? Though Tampa Bay GM Brian Lawton still will not confirm by name that the team is after the scoring wing, it is clear the Lightning would love Tanguay to play on a line with center Vinny Lecavalier, especially if you buy into the idea Marty St. Louis will start the season with center Steven Stamkos.
What Lawton did say, speaking generally, is, "We're still interested. We have an offer out there. ... It takes time. People want to evaluate all their options, and they should. You want to make the right decision. I understand that."
The scuttlebutt is the competition is between the Lightning and Wild, and Tanguay's agent did not respond to a text message. Lawton did confirm, though, that barring another player move that would cut payroll, it does not appear the Lightning will increase its offer.
"There won't be any increases on offers unless we move existing players," Lawton said. ... Read more
Competition on defense (maybe) and forward (likely) will define Tampa Bay Lightning training camp; and other tidbits
Looking over his team on two sheets of ice on Tuesday -- the rookie camp on one at the Ice Sports Forum in Brandon and the vets skating in pre-camp workouts to on the other -- Lightning GM Brian Lawton could say one thing about training camp that begins Sept. 12, there will be competition.
In fact, he said it already has started as far as the rookies are concerned.
"This is live fire, have at it," Lawton said he told his players.
But how much competition will there be, really? Lawton said there are two spots open on defense for the Lightning, but given the roster, it seems it's going to be very tough to crack the top eight, and Lawton has indicated he likely will keep eight defensemen on the roster. He also said up to five or six players will vie for the final spot on the top two lines already manned by Vinny Lecavalier, Steven Stamkos, Marty St. Louis, Ryan Malone and Alex Tanguay. That seems more likely to be the case, so let's take a look at that first. ... Read more
Tampa Bay Lightning signs defenseman Mike Lundin
The Lightning signed defenseman Mike Lundin to a one-year deal. It is a two-way contract that pays $550,000 if Lundin is in the NHL and $105,000 if he is in the minors.
"Mike signed a contract with the goal to play in Tampa," Lundin's agent Ben Hankinson said. "If it doesn't work out, in Tampa Bay, then we are confident GM Brian Lawton will give him a chance with another NHL club."
Here is the announcement from the team: ... Read more

Lundin back up; Ohlund "very close" to returning to action
The "whirlwind" week continues for defenseman Mike Lundin, who was called back up from AHL Norfolk just one day after getting sent down.
Lundin, whom coach Rick Tocchet said played well in Sunday's game against the Thrashers, was sent back and met up with Norfolk in Wilkes-Barre late Monday night. He was in the middle of practice Tuesday morning when he got pulled off the ice by coaches; he was coming back to Tampa, and is expected to play tonight.
"It’s a lot of traveling, but exciting," Lundin said. "I was obviously hoping, but not really expecting to get called up the first time. And so getting sent back down, I thought, 'Ok, I’ll be back down for a while and hopefully I'll l get a chance, and I definitely wasn’t expecting the very next day to be back on my way here. It's been a bit of a whirlwind, but I'm happy to be back."
How long Lundin stays remains to be seen. Tocchet said defenseman Mattias Ohlund is "very close" to returning after missing four games with a right ankle injury. Ohlund was at practice Wednesday, and although he won't play tonight, Tocchet says he's "day-to-day." ... Read more
