Big season coming for Tampa Bay Lightning and its relationship with AHL Norfolk
To say this is a big season in the relationship between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Norfolk Admirals, Tampa Bay's AHL affiliate, would be a bit of an understatement. The five-year deal between the clubs has an out clause for both sides after three seasons, and next season will be the third.
"Oh, sure," Admirals owner Ken Young said, "there will be evaluations on both sides."
The relationship is in no way contentious. Young said he has "no problem with the way (the Lightning) has been treating us." And he understands the troubles Tampa Bay has gone through, from an ownership squabble, to trying to overcome years of poor drafting, to last season's epidemic of injuries that forced the big club to raid Norfolk's roster for healthy bodies. Lightning GM Brian Lawton said Young has been "gracious."

Big Mitch Fritz was a member of the Lightning organization from August 2005, when he signed as a free agent until July 2007, when he was traded to the Rangers for defenseman Bryce Lampman. In two seasons with AHL Springfield, Fritz had six goals, 12 points and 356 penalty minutes in 132 games.

Just a minor move for your Sunday. The Tampa Bay Lightning reassigned center Blair Jones to AHL Norfolk. In two games with the Lightning, Jones had a shot and averaged 12:43 of ice time.
For third time in 2 weeks, Tampa Bay Lightning recalls Blair Jones from Norfolk
The Tampa Bay Lightning has recalled center Blair Jones from its AHL affiliate in Norfolk. No immediate word on the team's plans for Jones. But the kid is picking up some frequent flier miles. This is his third call-up since Dec. 3.
Jones played two games during his first time up and averaged 12:43 of ice time. He had one shot on goal, but impressed coach Rick Tocchet, who said at the time that Jones is someone he would like on the team.
Tampa Bay Lightning sends defenseman David Hale to AHL Norfolk for conditioning
The Tampa Bay Lightning announced it has reassigned defenseman David Hale to AHL Norfolk on a conditioning assignment. The assignments usually last two weeks.
Hale, acquired during the summer from the Coyotes in the Radim Vrbata deal, has played just two games in January. He has four assists and is an even plus-minus in 35 games on the season. ... Read more
Tampa Bay Lightning fires Wes Walz after he declines Norfolk head coaching job
A tumultuous day for the Tampa Bay Lightning got even more so Wednesday when assistant coach Wes Walz was fired after he declined to take the head coaching job at AHL Norfolk. That job opened when the Lightning promoted Admirals coach Jim Johnson to a Tampa Bay assistant. Walz was removed from his Tampa Bay assistants job to make room for Johnson.
Walz earlier in the day was said to be mulling whether to take the Norfolk job. No immediate word on who will fill that job, though a replacement likely will be named quickly.

Lightning affiliate Norfolk hires Mike Flanagan as an assistant coach
Tampa Bay Lightning affilate Norfolk has hired Mike Flanagan as an assistant coach, Norfolk Admirals general manager Julien BriseBois announced Friday.
Flanagan once played for the Admirals, which allows him to"understand the tradition of excellence that is expected in Hampton Roads,'' BriseBois said, but he also worked under current Admirals coach Jon Cooper with the St. Louis Bandits.
